Environmental Initiatives

We believe that companies can be profitable and environmentally responsible, even in the printing industry, which is why we have established a solid environmental record. Our focus on Printing, Community and the Environment provided the framework by which we measure ourselves. By sourcing new processes', new equipment and seeking innovative methods to reduce our environmental footprint, we continue to demonstrate our relentless commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility when it comes to the environment. Over the years, our customers have been demanding greater environmental responsibility and commitment from us and we have always exceeded their expectations. At Printcrafters, we fully comply with all relevant environmental legislation and industry best practice guidelines with emphasis on Health and Safety.

We are passionate about living up to this ideal every day.

Years ago we eliminated harmful chemicals and toxic materials from the printing process. Silver run-off, benzene and isopropyl alcohol are no longer used. Now in the pressroom, all inks used are vegetable based and all our press chemistry is alcohol free.

The age of using film and photographic chemicals within our prepress area has been replaced by the implementation of Computer to Plate Technology. 100% of all metal plates used are collected and recycled; even the plate processing chemistry is neutralized before being discarded.

Conserving energy has also been a priority, so we continually monitor our electricity usage and realize that this is a large part of our resource consumption. So with this in mind we are continually investing in new technology and equipment to reduce our power consumption throughout our facilities. This year we made improvements to our building's electrical system including replacing all our old light fixtures with energy-saving T8 fluorescent lights, which allows up to 30 per cent more efficient use of the electricity we consume. We have also upgraded our compressors to more energy efficient models and added a Power Factor which balances and harmonizes the power throughout the building.

Due to wide ranging humidity fluctuations, we have recently added to our plant a new air conditioning and humidity control system. Paper mills recommend specific humidity levels to keep paper stocks at their optimum quality standards. Therefore by implementing this new system, we can further reduce paper problems such as curling, registration issues, colour variations and uneven folding of signatures caused by fluctuations in humidity. All in all this makes the paper more stable for better quality printing and better working conditions for our employees.
